Extra Day, Extra Fun

February 9, 2010

It’s Tues. and I’m off work today! I normally work on Tues. but because of a schedule change at work, I’m going to have an extra day off this week. Well, actually I have to work tomorrow on my regular day off, but it’s only going to be until 9am and then I’ll be off the rest of the day. Which is like having the whole day off anyway.

But enough of this. I woke up at 4am this morning. I couldn’t make myself go back to sleep, so I’ve been trying to be quiet so Hubby can get his full eight hours. I’ve been on this computer since I got up. I have lots of craft and knitting sites I like to read but I’m running out of energy to read any more. My knitted baby afghan is calling me but I thought I’d start another entry here first.

As far as my crafts have been going this week, it’s been slow. A book that I ordered came in the mail several days ago so I’ve been reading a lot. The book is titled “The Lady in the Attic” by Tara Randel. Here’s the link that tells about the book. This is the first book in a new series by the Annie’s Attic Mysteries Series. I signed up to be sent the books as they come available. I’ve always liked mystery stories and especially if they happen around my favorite hobby, knitting and crochet. Needless to say, I’m enjoying the book. I’m getting far enough into it now that I’m having a harder and harder time putting it down. I don’t want to read the book all in one sitting which I tend to do when I read. I want to savor it as long as I can.

However, I have an extra day this week so I want to have some fun with crafts today. I’ll do my usual house chores tomorrow after I get home from work. Yuk! But today is going to be a fun day and I plan on doing some sewing on my BOM, knitting on my baby afghan, crochet a block or two for the afghan and maybe take a trip, through the new fallen snow, to my shop out back to do some painting. Big plans today. We’ll see if I get all of that done.

My Corner Shelf

February 6, 2010

We moved into this house a little over ten years ago. I like to re-decorate and make the house a “home” for us. It’s like a work-in-progress project that never really gets done. I work on one room and get it the way I like it, then move on to the next room. By the time I get all the rooms done, it’s time to start all over again because I’m tired of the way the first room looks and I want something different again. I take my time. This isn’t a project that has an ending. So when the mood strikes me, I start another room.

But I digress. I’ve been on the look-out for a corner shelf for the kitchen since I re-decorated it several years ago. I’m really into the country look so I wanted a shelf unit that would fit right in with my new red and white country kitchen. I knew what I wanted, but have’nt had an easy time finding it. First of all, corner shelves aren’t popular. So they aren’t plentiful. If I did come across one, it was too big, too “modern” looking, or whatever. I finally found one at the Fairgrove Heritage Days craft fair a few years ago. Perfect!! It was made of old barn wood and it was the perfect size too. I was so excited! But when I asked about it, the owner said that he had just sold it. I was crushed.

Needless to say, I’ve been looking everywhere I go for a corner shelf. Well, I found one.

It was at Hobby Lobby of all places. It’s not like the old barn-wood one, but I like it. It has a “distressed” finish which looks “country” to me. I told Hubby about it and he got it for me for Christmas! I finally got it filled with some of my “pretties”.

I’m sure I’ll be moving things around in it from time to time. I’d like to eventually fill it with more pottery. Or maybe not. Just whatever I feel like putting in it when a mood hits me.

Two Done!

February 4, 2010

A couple of my UFO’s can take their place as finished projects now! Here’s the fan blade. The two little snowflakes at the bottom are novelty pieces I just glued onto the fan blade. Hey, I’m not that talented!

And the x-stitch picture all framed. I painted the frame to match the heart in the picture. At first I thought about painting it blue but that would be too much blue, I think. The red makes the heart jump out and balances the picture more. What do you think?

I’m still working on the knitted baby afghan. I’ve gotten about six more inches on it. It’s got a lacy pattern, and even though I’m getting used to the directions for it, I still have to have it quiet with no other distractions or I’ll goof up. I hate unknitting!

I made a few more of the crocheted squares for the granny afghan. I might take that to work and make a few on my lunch hour. Maybe I won’t eat so much!

I haven’t worked on the x-stitch cat ornament this week. Maybe this afternoon. No, I’d better sew my block together for the BOM club. Yes, I’ve started another one for this year at Merrily’s. I’m making the Tone on Tone one if you want to go to their site to see it. It looks like this one will be the most challenging one for me so far. I like challenges so we’ll see!

Since I finished the fan blade project, I get to work on yet another project that I started who knows when. This is a snowman on a large pickle jar.

I found the pattern in one of my Create & Decorate magazines. The pattern is by Susan Burd. I love her paintings. She’s so talented.  AND she makes her own crocks!  I have to settle for a pickle jar. I love painting on glass. In fact, I think it’s my favorite surface for painting. Maybe because the glass project looks like pottery when it’s done. I love pottery. A dream of mine was to get into that craft medium also. But that’s all I need —  another craft to be into. I’ll just buy other people’s pottery at craft shows!

That’s it for this time. Stay tuned for more exciting craft adventures. . . . . . . .
