Curtains Are Up

December 31, 2010

Hubby helped me and we got the curtains and mini blinds hung in our new room yesterday.

Here’s a close-up of the curtains

The curtains are sheer with an embroidered flower design. The pic doesn’t show the color very well but they match the walls perfectly, I think. I’m happy with them anyway.

It’s nice now to be able to go in the room at night, turn the light on and not be seen by half the world.

What a Christmas!

December 29, 2010

This is certainly not a Christmas I want to repeat. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed Christmas — once it got here. The getting there was most of the problem.

After I hurried up and got the painting done on the room, we found out that the new carpet wouldn’t come until the Mon. after Christmas. Which is ok because it was really my fault for not getting it ordered soon enough. Besides, I still had all these gifts to wrap, make my pies and goodies, and be ready for Christmas.

I moved a card table and all the wrapping paraphernalia into the new room because of all the space. I could spread out to my heart’s content. I got a little carried away with gifts this year, plus I wrap all the stocking stuffers, (everybody gets stocking stuffers no matter how old they are), and I wrapped 156 gifts! It took most of two days with just a few breaks in between. I like wrapping gifts, but I was getting tired before the last one was done.

The evening of the 23rd, I got a call from #1 Daughter. She was scheduled for emergency surgery the next day. What?!? This came out of the blue — well, sort of. I knew that she’d been having trouble with her bowels for quite a while now (as in several years). We’ve all tried to talk her into seeing a doctor about it, but NO, she just knew it was something she ate and it would get better. Which it did most of the time — after she’d suffered almost unbearably for a few days.

Well, this time it didn’t go away. In fact, it kept getting worse. By the time I found out about it, she was already in the hospital and scheduled for surgery the next day. It was going to be for late afternoon. I still had baking to do because I’d already committed to bringing pies to our Christmas with the son and family in KC on Christmas Day. I’m glad I had the baking to do because it kept my mind busy and I tried not to think about my baby being cut open. Her husband called about 7:30 to tell us that it was over and she made it through ok. I knew she was going to be out of it the rest of the night.

We gathered up gifts for two of the grandsons who are living with their dad and run the gifts out to them so they would have them on Christmas morning. We came back home and went to bed.

I work in retail and had to work from 11:00 am to 8:30 pm on Christmas Eve. I called work and told them that I would probably be late to work because my daughter had just had surgery and I was going to go see by baby. (Well, I didn’t tell them that I wanted to see “my baby”.) She was in a LOT of pain, so we didn’t stay too long. I was on the verge of crying the whole time we were there. I just wanted to take her in my arms and make the pain go away. It doesn’t matter how old your children get, they’re still your babies.

The next morning, Christmas morning, we got up at 5:00 am and loaded the car and took off for KC. We stopped about half-way there for a break and to get some coffee. I called Daughter to check up on her. I kept seeing her pained face in my mind’s eye, and I had to know that she was doing ok. She was. She sounded so much better and told me that she had been up and even washed her hair! I knew she was still in a lot of pain and was trying to not worry me, but I could tell from her voice that she did feel some better.

We got to KC and unloaded our gifts. The seven-year old grandson said, “Hi Grandma, where’s the gifts?” They had already opened their gifts from Santa, and they were just as excited to open our gifts. The four-year old gasped in surprise with every gift — even the ones that were for someone else! It was so cute!

After all the gifts were opened, the seven-year old said with a sad face, “Is that all?”

It wasn’t though, because when the rest of DIL’s family came, they had even more gifts for the kids to open. They had quite a day of gifts! We had 16 for dinner. It was a nice day.

Hubby and I got up and left the next day to come home. We got home about an hour before I had to go to work and work until 11 pm. Needless to say, I was pretty tired and ready for bed that night.

Monday morning the carpet guys came before I was out of bed. I still had the wrapping mess in the new room, so Hubby and I had to scurry to get it cleaned up. I guess I thought they would call first just to make sure we were home if for no other reason. Silly me. They just showed up.

Anyway, they got the padding down,

but when they went to roll out the carpet, there were two big slashes right in the middle of the carpet. They had to order another one. It won’t be delivered until next week because they don’t deliver between Christmas and New Year’s Day. So we won’t get our new carpet until the end of the next week! What a bummer!

We loaded up the car with gifts for #1 Daughter’s family and run them out to their house. She was scheduled to come home from the hospital and we knew that they would have their Christmas later that day. (They all waited to have their Christmas until she got home from the hospital.) The two grandsons were there to let us in. I felt like Santa bringing in all those gifts.

I had to go to work later, but she e-mailed me to thank us and to let us know that they enjoyed opening their gifts. She’s on the road to recovery now, thank God! Hopefully she won’t have any more of those terribly painful issues that she’s lived with for years!

Painting Is Done!

December 20, 2010

I just finished the last of the painting!

I spent most of the day putting the second coat of paint on the door facings and the first coat of paint around the window. I sanded the closet doors and applied another coat of varnish. After a supper break, I finished the second coat of paint around the window and put the third coat of varnish on the doors.

I took another break and watched the Survivor finale. It was a two-hour finale and then an hour of the Reunion show. It was great!!

Anyway, I cleaned up my mess, swept the floor, and was going to wet mop it so it would be nice and clean to put our new carpet down on, but I fizzled out. I’ll do that first thing in the morning.

Painting and More Painting

December 17, 2010

It seems like I’ll never get all this painting done. We had an issue with part of the walls in the old section of the room. The paint wasn’t sticking and had to be taken off, sanded, and re-painted. I did all the work. We’re not sure what happened, but it’s looking pretty good now.

Then I got the rest of the trimming around the ceiling done. Next was paint the rest of the trimming that the workers put on around the closet opening and around the new window.

I stained the closet doors yesterday. . . .

They look really nice. I need to put a couple of coats of finish on them and they’ll be ready to hang. The guys are coming back after the carpet is down to hang the doors. That will ensure that they will slide over the carpet without hanging up.

Also, the gutter man came yesterday and finished up putting the gutter and downspouts on the new addition.

We ordered the carpet and they told us it would be Fri. or Mon. before it’s here. I’m sure it will be at least Mon. I hope so. That’ll give me over the weekend to get more painting done. After I put the two coats of finish on the closet doors, I’ll paint the trim around the original window, the original closet door and the entrance door.

I’m really getting tired of working on this room. At this point, I’m just wanting it to be done. Christmas is next weekend and I still have so much to do. I’ll just be happy to get all these gifts wrapped so we can get them distributed to everybody to have for their Christmas.

Remind me to never start a project like this in the Fall time of the year. That’s the busiest time for me normally, without an extra huge project like this going on.

Busy Weekend

December 13, 2010

Our oldest Grandson had a birthday Sat. He turned 20 years old!

It’s hard to believe that we have a GRANDson who’s 20.

Hubby went through our newly digitized home movies and made Grandson a movie of clips from his first weeks up to age 16 or 17. We ran over to see him before I had to go to work Sat. We took him a gift of the movie, popcorn, and movie candy,

and of course money. (That’s all teenage boys seem to want!)

We stayed about an hour and had a nice visit. Hubby wanted them to try the movie on the computer to see if it would work. Grandson and his dad seemed to get excited about getting to see the movie. It started just fine and we left them watching it as we left. I’m betting that they stayed right there and watched the whole thing.

Update on Construction:

Hubby and I painted this weekend. I told the guy when he was writing up the contract that I would do the painting because (a) I wanted to save a little money and (b) I like to paint. So after all the waiting we did on them to get this construction project to this point, they wanted us to get the painting done NOW. They told us that they wanted it painted over the weekend and they would come back Mon. to put up the trim and install the closet doors. I told the guy that I work over the weekends, but he didn’t seem to hear me. He just kept talking about how close they were to getting it done.

So we painted over the weekend. Hubby painted the walls and I painted the closet and the trimming around the ceiling, windows and doors. We had to put two coats on everything. A couple of hours Sat. morning, then we cleaned up, ran out to see Grandson, then I went to work until midnight. They brought the trim Sat. and wanted us to put one coat of paint on them even though they were already white. Guess what Hubby did after I went to work,

Sun. we painted until I had to clean up and go to work again. We got the second coats on and I got a little more of the trimming around the ceiling done.

I still have the rest of the ceiling trimming to do, and also I’m painting the trim around the doors and the old window white. But it’ll have to wait until they get done with the trim work. Maybe by Wed. and Thurs when I’m off work I can get back in there and take my time to finish up.

We wanted to get the closet done because they’re supposed to put the racks and pole inside and install the closet doors. I painted it white. Even though the pic doesn’t show it, it’s a really bright white. I love it!

They’re in the room sawing and hammering right now. I can’t wait to see it after the white trimming is up next to our pretty greenish/blueish walls.
